Moving Checklist

General Items:

  • Give your forwarding address to the Post Office, usually 2-4 weeks
    ahead of moving
  • Notify your credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, newspapers and
    your bank of your change of address
  • Cancel checking & savings accounts at your local branch & transfer to your new bank.
    Order new checks with your new address
  • Develop a list of friends, relatives & business colleagues who need to be notified of your move
  • Create an inventory list of everything to be moved
  • Arrange to have the utilities transferred to the next owner, DO NOT DISCONNECT the utilities,
    just tell them you are moving and ask to be taken off the account and to no longer bill you
  • Contact the utility companies in the town/city you are moving to and have utilities put in your
    name & turned on the day of your arrival
  • Check the moving company’s policy on insurance and find out if the items they are moving for
    you are all insured against damage by them. If not, purchase “Transfer Coverage” from your
    insurance agent
  • Note the weight of the items you are moving by asking the mover. Moving costs are tied to weight.
    Make sure no excessive padding is used
  • Confirm the moving company’s arrival time at your destination point
  • Find out if your employer helps pay moving expenses & the company policy
  • Have the house professionally cleaned or leave it in “broom clean” condition at a minimum
  • Write on moving boxes with magic marker identifying what is inside the box. Make an “open
    first” box with items you will need immediately at you new home
  • Complete a final walk-trough of the house before you leave

If You Are Moving Out Of Town:

  • Have you car serviced if you are driving
  • Get copies of medical, dental records and prescriptions for your family and pets
  • Get copies of children’s school records for transfer
  • Let a friend or relative know your route
  • Carry travelers checks or an ATM card for ready cash
  • Empty your safe deposit box
  • Refer to “Helpful Websites” found in your C-21 Carole White Associates listing packet
  • Put plants in boxes with holes for circulation
  • Get pet carriers for your pets
  • Get movies on DVD and laptop DVD players for you children if you are planning a long car ride
  • Pack snacks for munching on!
  • Have your new address recorded on your new drivers license and register your car
  • Notify Post Office of your arrival
  • Register to vote

Items to Leave for the Next Homeowners

  • Owner’s manuals for all appliances, heating systems and any built-in electronic systems
  • Any warranty information that may still be in effect
  • A list of your favorite local service providers
  • Extra sets of keys
  • Codes to burglar alarms and phone number of alarm monitoring service.
  • Garage door openers
